Camera Filters for Google Meet: A Complete Guide
Looking to enhance your appearance on Google Meet? You're in the right place! This complete guide covers both Google Meet's built-in filters and advanced third-party solutions to help you look your best on camera.
Google Meet's Built-in Filters & Effects
Google Meet includes several free built-in filters and effects that you can use to enhance your video. Here's how to access and use them:
- Join or start a Google Meet call
- Click the three dots menu (⋮) in the bottom right
- Select "Apply visual effects"
- A panel will open on the right with several filter categories:
- Backgrounds
- Filters
- Appearance
How to Apply Google Meet's Built-in Filters
Here's a detailed breakdown of each effect type:
Appearance
- Click the "Appearance" tab in the effects panel
- Select from options like:
- Studio lighting
- Studio look
- Styles
This tab is most useful for professional meetings. It allows you to apply studio lighting, studio look, and styles to your appearance. This can make you look more polished and professional, even in poor lighting conditions.
Portrait Touch-up & Skin Smoothing
The "Appearance" tab is where you can also find the portrait touch-up feature if available.
Portrait touch-up is a new feature in Google Meet that applies skin smoothing, lightens eye bags and whitens your eyes. There are two options: subtle & smooth. The subtle option is less intense and more natural looking, while the smooth option is more dramatic.
To enable portrait touch-up, go to the "Appearance" tab and find the "Portrait touch-up" option. Select the subtle or smooth option.
Please note that portrait touch-up is currently only available on these Google plans:
- Google One
- Google Workspace individual
- Enterprise Essentials
- Business Standard
- Business Plus
- Enterprise Starter
- Enterprise Standard
- Enterprise / ESKU (Legacy)
- Enterprise Plus
- G Suite ESKU
- Teaching and Learning Upgrade
- Education Plus
If you're on a different plan, you will not see the portrait touch-up option.
Filters
- Select the "Filters" tab in the effects panel
- Choose from:
- Funny
- Characters
- Costumes
- Accessories
The filters Google Meet offers are mostly just for fun and novelty. These filters are not professional and are not recommended for business meetings.
However, they can be fun for casual meetings or personal use. You can turn yourself into a cake, add cat ears, or turn yourself into a strawberry.
Backgrounds
- Select the "Backgrounds" tab in the effects panel
- Choose from options like:
- Professional
- Cozy home
- Nature
- Stylized
- Fantasy
You can also blur your background & upload custom backgrounds. Google Meet will also provide seasonal backgrounds for events like Halloween, Christmas, and more.
Some users also have the option to generate a background using AI. Simply type in a prompt like "green screen" or "studio background", select a style, and Google Meet will generate a background for you.
Unable to apply Google Meet filters?
If you're unable to apply filters, it's possible your workspace admins have disabled the feature. Ask your IT department to check your organization's settings.
Google Workspace admins can enable filters by going to Settings for Google Meet > Meet video settings. Then scroll to the "Visual effects" section and select "Enable visual effects".
While these built-in filters are convenient, they're fairly basic. For more professional-looking results, you may want to consider a third-party solution like Filteronme.
